"Accountant" is a broad word. In Pakistan, several different qualifications and registrations sit behind it, each regulated by a different body and suited to different work. Understanding the difference helps you hire the right professional.
Chartered Accountant (CA) — ICAP
Chartered Accountants are regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP). CA firms typically provide statutory audit and assurance, income and sales tax advisory, FBR and SECP compliance, corporate secretarial work and business advisory. If you need audited financial statements, you need a CA firm.
Cost & Management Accountant (CMA) — ICMAP
Cost & Management Accountants are regulated by the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP). They specialise in cost accounting, management accounting, financial management, budgeting and taxation — strong choices where cost control and internal financial management matter.
ACCA — Chartered Certified Accountant
ACCA members hold the globally recognised Chartered Certified Accountant qualification. Many provide accounting, bookkeeping, taxation, audit support and advisory services to businesses across Pakistan, including FBR return filing, NTN registration and SECP compliance.
Income Tax Practitioner (ITP)
Income Tax Practitioners are registered to represent taxpayers before the FBR. They handle NTN registration, income and sales tax return filing, notices, assessments and refunds. For routine tax matters, an ITP is often the most cost-effective option.
Which should you choose?
- Need audited accounts / a statutory audit? Choose a CA firm.
- Need tax returns, NTN or FBR correspondence? An ITP, ACCA or tax advisor can help.
- Need cost/management accounting or budgeting? Consider a CMA.
- Running a company with SECP obligations? A CA firm or a firm with corporate-compliance experience.
