Choosing the right accountant is one of the most important decisions a business owner or individual taxpayer makes. The right firm keeps your books accurate, files your returns with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on time, and helps you stay compliant with income tax, sales tax and corporate law. This guide explains what to look for.
1. Check the firm's professional body
In Pakistan, accountants are registered through recognised professional bodies. The main ones are Chartered Accountants (CA), regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP); Cost & Management Accountants (CMA), regulated by the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP); ACCA members (Chartered Certified Accountants); and Income Tax Practitioners (ITPs), who are registered to represent taxpayers before the FBR. Match the body to your need — a statutory audit must be signed by a CA firm, while routine tax filing can be handled by an ITP or tax advisor.
2. Match the firm to your needs
Be clear about what you need before you start: income tax return filing, NTN or sales tax registration, bookkeeping and payroll, a statutory audit, SECP company incorporation, or ongoing advisory. A sole trader filing a simple return needs very different support from a company that requires an audit.
3. Questions to ask before you hire
- Which professional body are you registered with, and can you share your registration details?
- Do you have experience with businesses like mine (my sector and size)?
- How do you charge — fixed fee, hourly, or retainer — and what is included?
- Who will handle my work day to day, and how do we communicate?
- Can you represent me if the FBR issues a notice or audit?
4. Watch for red flags
Be cautious of anyone who guarantees a specific refund, asks you to under-declare income, or cannot show a verifiable registration. A good accountant keeps you compliant, not exposed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a chartered accountant or an income tax practitioner?
If you only need tax returns and FBR correspondence, a registered ITP or tax advisor is usually enough. If you need a statutory audit or audited accounts (for example to satisfy SECP or a bank), you need a CA firm.
How much does an accountant cost in Pakistan?
Fees vary widely by firm, city and the complexity of your work, so ask for a written quote. Compare two or three firms rather than choosing on price alone.
Where can I find a verified accountant?
You can browse AOPA's national directory of member firms, filter by city and professional body, and contact firms directly for free.
